    MEMPHIS, Tenn. – October 7, 2024 – The Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis Board of Directors named Dr. Bobby White as their new President and CEO today. Dr. White is a native Memphian, long-time educator and founder of Frayser Community Schools, a Leadership Memphis Changemaker award recipient, and a 2014 Leadership Memphis Executive Program graduate.

     

    Dr. White will accept the position from Interim President and CEO, Shirley Ford on Monday, October 7, 2024. Ford began her tenure as Interim President and CEO when past President and CEO, Reggie Crenshaw, announced his departure to pursue other opportunities in June of this year.

     

    “Over the last few months, we embarked on a search to find our next CEO for Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis, and I am proud to announce today that our search is over. The executive search committee and the board of Directors have approved Dr. Bobby White as the next President and CEO of Leadership Memphis. We are extremely thankful to Shirley Ford, who served as Interim President and CEO for the past three months. We know Dr. White will continue to build upon the great work Ms. Ford started during her tenure as well as the Leadership Memphis legacy built over the last 46 years to lead the organization to reach its fullest potential,” said Dr. Shunji Brown-Woods, Search Committee Chair, Leadership Memphis.

     

    As a tireless champion for his hometown of Memphis, his immediate community of Frayser, the development of young people, the improvement of the educational system, the betterment of Memphis, and his dedication to effective and inspirational leadership Dr. White brings more than 20 years of leadership and community-uplifting work experience to Leadership Memphis.

     

    Dr. White served as the Assistant Director for the Tennessee Charter School Resource Center then began his tenure with Memphis City Schools where he served for 12 years as a Teacher, Coach, Assistant Principal and Principal while working in the schools with the most need for leadership in the city. Following his time at Memphis City Schools, Dr. White completed the Tennessee Charter Incubator and founded Frayser Community Schools, a Charter Management Organization designed with the intent of positively transforming schools with the support of the community to build Family Centered Schools (FCS) in Frayser and Memphis Communities as a whole.

     

    Dr. White has a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Freed Hardeman University, a Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with an Urban Focus from the University of Memphis, and a Bachelor of Arts in History/Political Science from LeMoyne-Owen College.

    Executive Search for President/CEO of Leadership Memphis is Open and Ongoing

    MEMPHIS, Tenn., June 6, 2024 — Leadership Memphis, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering leadership and community engagement in Memphis for 45 years, announced today that Shirley Ford has been named Interim President while an executive search for the organization’s next President/CEO is ongoing. The organization recently announced that the current President and CEO, Reggie Crenshaw, is leaving to pursue corporate opportunities.

    Ford, a 2019 Leadership Memphis executive class graduate, past Board Chair, current board member, and senior executive with over 30 years of experience in finance and administration most recently served as Chief Financial Officer for the City of Memphis.

    “The Leadership Memphis board is grateful for the contributions Reggie has made to the organization during his tenure and is pleased to announce that Shirley Ford has accepted the position of Interim President/CEO while the executive search for the next President/CEO is underway. Shirley’s 30-plus years of experience in finance and administration across many different types of businesses and government entities, along with her unwavering support of Leadership Memphis, serving as Board Chair and on the Executive Committee of the board along with serving other nonprofits and entities in Memphis and the state of Tennessee will ensure a smooth transition and position Leadership Memphis for continued success for the next President/CEO,” said Rene Bustamante, Leadership Memphis Board Chair.

    Ford, a certified public accountant and certified municipal Finance Officer, holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Memphis. She has served on many governmental and business-related boards. She has received numerous honors and awards, including CFO of the Year in 2019 and induction into the Government Finance Officers Association Leadership Academy in 2022.

    The 16th Annual Multicultural Breakfast will occur on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at The Guest House at Graceland from 7:30 – 9:00 a.m. 

    The 16th Annual Multicultural Breakfast will offer a vibrant and inclusive environment for guests.  This year’s theme, “Reframing DEI: Breaking Barriers to Improve Economic Mobility,” promises to ignite insightful discussions and foster greater awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

    Join us for a morning of enlightenment and collaboration, as we explore the innovative ways four local non-profit agencies are breaking down barriers and enhancing economic mobility for all.     Keynote Speaker: Dr. Elena Delavega

     

    Dr. Elena Delavega, PhD, MSW, will be the keynote speaker for the 16th Annual Multicultural Breakfast. Elena Delavega, PhD, MSW is Professor of Social Work at the University of Memphis, where she teaches and researches poverty and social welfare policy.  Dr. Delavega’s areas of expertise involve poverty, its causes, measurement, and remediation. Dr. Delavega has created a body of work consisting of over 33 peer-reviewed publications; over 100 reports, newspaper/magazine articles, book chapters, fact sheets, and translations; close to 200 presentations, including international presentations, keynote addresses, and a TEDx Talk focused on the Blame Index, which she developed in 2017 and is the focus of her future interests. She has produced the Memphis Poverty Factsheet, updated yearly, since 2012. She has also given close to 200 media interviews locally, nationally, and worldwide. Additionally, she serves on the board the Memphis Coalition for the Homeless, and on the board of Impact Tennessee. She is a research collaborator of the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis and has edited Volumes II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII of the Hooks Policy Papers. In 2018, she collaborated with the National Civil Rights Museum to produce the report on the state of Black Shelby County, Memphis Poverty Report: Memphis Since MLK, in conjunction with the commemorative activities surrounding the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. With her profound expertise in social work and a Ph.D. to her name, Dr. Delavega will undoubtedly provide valuable insights into the pressing issues surrounding DEI, as she announces the results of the 2023 Memphis Poverty Report.     David Jordan, President & CEO of Agape

     

    David Jordan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from David Lipscomb University and a Master of Science degree in social work from the University of Tennessee.  In 1992, he received licensure as a clinical social worker. He has served in the social service field for 35 years. Jordan knew early on in life he wanted to help others, especially children and families. Under his leadership, Agape has experienced continued progress as they seek God’s heart for our great city.

    David and his wife Theresa have been married since 1987 and have been blessed with three fabulous children and three grandsons. He and his family attend White Station Church of Christ where David has served as an elder from 2006 – 2021. Theresa, who formerly served as a GED/HiSet teacher at HopeWorks, currently serves as a children’s minister.

    Dwayne Spencer, President & CEO of  Habitat for Humanity

     

    Dwayne Spencer has worked in nonprofit management for 30 years and led Memphis Habitat since 2001. He has extensive experience working with a wide range of community constituencies to create strategic partnerships and impactful collaborations. Since joining Memphis Habitat, Spencer has grown the organization from a 9-member staff to more than 60 employees, from a $1 million budget to $18 million, and from serving 15-20 families a year to approximately 250-plus annually through the launch of the Aging In Place program. Today, Memphis Habitat ranks in the top 45 home producing Habitat for Humanity affiliates and in the top five for home repairs out of more than 1,100 in the U.S. Spencer holds a master’s degree in public administration from The University of Memphis.

     

    Cathy Pope, President & CEO of  Mid-South Food Bank

     

     

    Prior to moving to Mid-South Food Bank in August 2019, Cathy Pope had been President & CEO of Feeding the Gulf Coast since August 2016. Before that, she was the Executive Director for Meals on Wheels of Middle Georgia. Cathy also has nonprofit experience with the Susan G. Komen Foundation, as well as the Fuller Center for Housing in Macon, Georgia. Cathy received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Georgia Southwestern State University, a Master of Arts in Political Science from Georgia State University, and an MBA in Finance from Texas Christian University. She has four grown children.

    Cathy currently holds numerous positions on volunteer boards. She is a member of Feeding America’s Policy Engagement and Advocacy Committee (PEAC) where she works to address domestic hunger and related issues to policymakers. Cathy also serves on BancorpSouth’s Corporate Community Advisory Council.  She is a member of both the Safety Net Collaborative and the Food Insecurity and Food Accessibility Collaborative, in Memphis, Tennessee.

     

    Sally Jones Heinze, President & CEO of  MIFA

     

    Sally Jones Heinz came to MIFA (Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association) in 2007 as Vice President of Development. She became Executive Director in 2011, only the sixth person to hold that position in MIFA’s 55-year history. The organization’s mission is supporting the independence of vulnerable seniors and families in crisis through high-impact programs.

    Sally’s roots are in Memphis—she grew up in Midtown, went to Evergreen Presbyterian Church, attended Snowden School, Central High, and Rhodes College (’81), and settled down with her husband Brad a few blocks from her childhood home. And service is in her genes. Her father, Jameson Jones, was dean of Rhodes College and president of Memphis College of Art; and her uncle, Dr. Paul Tudor Jones, was pastor of Idlewild Presbyterian Church and a founder of MIFA. She received an M.A. in American Studies from The University of Texas in Austin before returning to Memphis in 1983. Before coming to MIFA, Sally served as Executive Director at Memphis Heritage; Director of Marketing and Vice President for Publications at Robert F. Sharpe and Co.; Director of Alumni, Acting Director of Communications, and Director of Publications at Rhodes College; and Associate Director of Development and Director of Development at Memphis Brooks Museum of Art.

     

    Dr. Kenneth Robinson, President & CEO of  United Way

     

    Dr. Kenneth S. Robinson became the President/CEO of United Way of the Mid-South in February 2015, yet his volunteer and board-level leadership with United Way of the Mid-South extends nearly 25 years.

    Dr. Robinson’s bi-professional synthesis of medicine and ministry has made him a strong leader in the areas of public policy, health and healthcare, and community development at the highest levels of local, state and national impact. He served in the Governor’s Cabinet as Tennessee’s Commissioner of Health (2003-2007), guiding significant contracting and grant-making authority within his Department’s $548 million budget. Prior to joining United Way, he was the consultant and public health policy advisor to the Mayor of Shelby County (2008-2015) and Chair of “Healthy Shelby,” which was highlighted by United Way Worldwide as a replicable model of public/private collective impact.

    For 25 years (1991-2016), Dr. Robinson also served as Pastor and CEO of St. Andrew AME Church in Memphis; developing health and human services, high-quality childcare, Pre-K and K-5 education, and economic development initiatives.  He founded an associated CDC, The Works, Inc., a very effective nonprofit that partners with United Way to impact lives locally. The entire St. Andrew Enterprise has become a major stakeholder in creating a healthy, sustainable community; responsible for over $22 million of new investment in South Memphis.

    The Leadership Memphis Executive Program brings together the brightest and most experienced leaders, decision-makers, influencers, and connectors in the greater Memphis community, with the goals of learning more about our great city, celebrating our community’s assets, and digging deeper into complex issues and challenges facing the Greater Memphis area.   • 15th Annual Multicultural Breakfast – Advancing DEI: Leading Through Mentorship

     

    The 15th Annual Multicultural Breakfast Friday,  occurred on November 11, 2022, at The Guest House at Graceland.

    This year, the focus was on the importance of mentorship and how it can impact the future of Memphis.  Agencies across the Mid-South provide mentorship programs for our youth. At this event, we spotlighted four agencies: Boys & Girls Club of Greater Memphis, Memphis Grizzlies Foundation, Peer Power, and Youth Villages. Learn more about our spotlight agencies here. In recognition of Veteran’s Day, we also got to hear a special Fireside Chat featuring local Military Flag Officers on the importance of mentorship in the military, moderated by Valerie Morris Bearup (EP2014).

  • 9/11 Days of Service and Remembrance 2022

     

    Volunteer Memphis and Leadership Memphis will engage volunteers to honor first responders on the 21st commemoration of the September 11 attacks.

    TIME: Various times throughout the day

    LOCATION: Fire Stations across Memphis

    EVENT: Volunteer Memphis, Leadership Memphis, and the City of Memphis are joining together to support Memphis Police Officers, Memphis Firefighters, Emergency Medical Teams, and Military on Monday, September 12 with two large-scale service projects, and a recognition event for the entire city of Memphis.     Health and Wellness Expo Offering Vaccinations, Wellness Kits, and Professional Services to Community on May 18

    MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 5, 2022 – New Direction Christian Church, The Power Center Community Development Corporation, Leadership Memphis, and Volunteer Memphis announced a free Health and Wellness Expo scheduled for May 18 at New Direction Christian Church located at 6120 Winchester Road from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event will be held in partnership with the Shelby County Health Department and Memphis Housing and Community Development. Students, families, and others in attendance will be able to get vaccinated for COVID-19, Meningitis, HPV, and all vaccinations required by Memphis-Shelby County Schools as well as have access to financial, legal, counseling, and job recruitment services.

    “With schools transitioning between in-person and virtual classrooms over the last two years, some students are behind on their vaccinations. We are proud to partner with exceptional organizations to host the Health and Wellness Expo May 18 at New Direction Church to offer a safe way for students to get vaccinated and protect themselves and others from these illnesses,” said Reggie Crenshaw, President and CEO of Leadership Memphis and Volunteer Memphis.

    Anyone in attendance will be able to receive a vaccine, not just students. People wanting to get vaccinated will need to bring their ID, shot record, and insurance card. Individuals that receive Tenncare will be able to show their Tenncare cards for free vaccinations. People without health insurance will also be able to receive free vaccinations. Anyone who would like to be vaccinated and cannot get their shots that day will be able to schedule a future appointment to visit a clinic, or for a home visit.

    “The goal of the Health and Wellness Expo is to connect the community with the health resources they need in a place they trust. We are extremely grateful to our community partners for offering their services and we look forward to helping the students, families, and anyone else in attendance,” said Dr. Stacy Spencer, Senior Pastor for New Direction Christian Church.

    The Health and Wellness Expo will also offer free health and wellness kits to people that receive Tenncare or EBT benefits and show their registration cards. In addition to the health and wellness offerings, the event will feature organizations offering financial, legal, counseling, and job recruitment services for anyone in need.

    “As an organization that promotes the sustainability of our community, we want to always be a liaison in making resources accessible. This event will offer support to families in multiple ways,” said Dr. Alexis Gwin-Miller, Executive Director of the Power Center CDC.

    The May 18 Health and Wellness Expo will be held at New Direction Christian Church located at 6120 Winchester Rd. from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The event is free and open for all to attend. Anyone wanting to be vaccinated will need to bring their ID, shot record, and insurance card.
